The tradition of Estonian
song and dance celebrations is very strong and large-scale as the tradition of song and dance celebrations is maintained and developed by one centre of competence – the Estonian Song and Dance Celebration Foundation (ESDCF).
ESDCF is a foundation established by the state that is at present financed by the state through the budget of the Ministry of Culture.
ESDCF incorporates unique know-how of the organisation of song and dance celebrations that has been gathered over the decades.
The objective of the activities of ESDCF is to ensure the sustainability and evolution of the movement of song and dance celebrations.
ESDCF organises four nation-wide song and dance celebrations in the course of every ten years:
- every 2nd and 7th year of the decade a youth song and dance celebration
- every 4th and 9th year of the decade a general song and dance celebration.
Important partners for ESDCF are the sectoral umbrella organisations such as the Estonian Choral Association (the Choral Association) and the Estonian Folk Dance and Folk Music Association (ERRS) that ensure the artistic competence of the song and dance celebrations by confirming the members of the artistic teams and approving the suitability of the repertoire based on the criteria of the song and dance celebrations.
The Choral Association and ERRS also arrange training and development activities of the groups involved in the movement of song and dance celebrations by means of mentor programmes, courses and concert and festival programmes.
ESDCF is managed by the Supervisory Board that consists of the representatives of the various organisations involved in the organisation of song and dance celebrations (the Ministry of Culture, the Choral Association and ERRS etc). There are seven full-time employees working at the office of ESDCF who are in charge of the sustainable maintenance and systematic development of the movement of song and dance celebrations. The organisation of each song and dance celebration is based on a 3-year programme starting with the competition for the submission of a conceptual design and ending with the actual event. Overall the organisation of each celebration involves approximately 1000 contractual employees.
